2024 Volnay, Marquis d'Angerville

An all but invisible whiff of volatile acidity lurks in the background of the more floral-suffused aromas of dark cherry and crushed anise. There is slightly better volume to the delicious and vibrant lighter weight flavors that reflect both a hint of bitter pit fruit and youthfully austerity on the balanced and solidly persistent finale. A bit more intense than the Bourgogne Rouge. Bright cranberry fruit. Some real volume on the palate. Really quite an impressive, complete wine with some persistence and the fresh side of a Côte de Beaune burgundy emphasised. The 2024 Volnay Village includes some fruit eked from the Premier Crus this year. It has quite a precocious nose with Morello cherries and crushed strawberry, just a touch of cassis coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet candied opening. Quite fleshy and harmonious although it needs more grip and density at the back end. As such, this will be a Volnay that should be broached in its flush of youth. ~ (89) Neal Martin, Vinous 1-1-2026
