The wood regimen isn't subtle if not dominant on the markedly earth-inflected nose of notably ripe but fresh dark currant and poached plum aromas. There is once again good volume and richness to the solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors that coat the mouth on the powerful, lightly austere and firm finale. The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is a little perplexing on the nose, earthier than expected, and perhaps missing the cohesion that I found on the Côte de Nuits. The palate is more promising, with firm tannins that impart backbone, dark berry fruit laced with graphite, fine depth and more harmony toward the finish. The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is rich and creamy, delivering aromas of sweet cassis, berries, burning embers and spices, framed by a touch of new oak.
