2022 Cote Rotie, La Landonne, Rene Rostaing
From one of the greatest terroirs in the appellation, the 2022 Côte Rôtie La Landonne reveals powerful black and blue fruits, graphite, crushed stone, and liquid violet notes, with subtle espresso in the background. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it has a beautifully focused, mineral-laced character and impeccable balance. The tannins are serious yet integrated, and this profound wine will require a decade of patience and should evolve gracefully for three decades or more. Drink 2033-2063.One of the reference points for Côte Rôtie, Domaine Rostaing is now firmly in the hands of Pierre Rostaing, who continues the legacy of his father René. Farming is sustainable, and winemaking remains traditional, with full destemming (there might be a stem or two in some of these) and élevage in a mix of larger older and new French oak, with the new wood kept to a minimum. The range includes the classic Côte Rôtie Ampodium, which blends multiple parcels, as well as single lieu-dit bottlings from La Landonne, Côte Blonde, Côte Brune, and Le Viallière. A Condrieu and a Collines Rhodaniennes Syrah (Les Lézardes) round out the lineup. ~ (97) Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com 5-9-2025
Brooding and complex, the 2022 Côte-Rôtie La Landonne has developed splendidly since I last tasted it from barrel one year ago. Fresh violets, stemmy subtleties, pencil shaving, black cherry and crushed rock notes are all dialed up. A slice of orange rind adds another aromatic layer. Firmly structured by ripe tannins, the 2022 is a singular La Landonne, closing with drive on the nuanced finale. ~ (95) Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous 1-1-2025
Textural intrigue seduces in this muscular and meaty red, with a well of black currant and plum, plus plenty of smoky depth. Chalky in feel, with black pepper and lavender details, including bitter plum pit at the end. Stays focused throughout despite its ripeness, and the tannins are sturdy yet fine-grained, with smoldering graphite underpinnings. There's a lot of power, but elegance too. Best from 2027 through 2042. 500 cases made. ~ (95) Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator 8-31-2025
