2022 Chateau de Pez
From an estate that has now been fully restructured and which serves as something of a research and development laboratory for its sibling, Pichon Lalande, the 2022 de Pez exhibits aromas of sweet blackberries and cherries mingled with spices and violets. Medium to full-bodied, rich and lively, with powdery tannins that assert themselves on the youthfully chewy finish, some 40% of the production was lost to hail. For the first time, it will be sold en primeur via the place de Bordeaux. ~ (92) William Kelley, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 4-28-2023
The 2022 de Pez is a stellar wine. Plum, blood orange, exotic spice, cedar and new leather fill out the layers. Technical Director Nicolas Glumineau has increased the focus at Pez through stricter selection in the field and greater attention in the winery—something made easier with the new cellar. Among other things, the team also lengthened élevage to 18 months from the more typical 12-15 months. The 2022 is a major step forward at Pez. ~ (94) Antonio Galloni , Vinous 1-1-2025
The 2022 Château de Pez, which was affected by hail in June, now undergoes a gentler extraction and aged in barrels from different coopers than previously. It has a classy, well-defined bouquet with crushed stone, truffle and black fruit aromas unfolding neatly on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied and tertiary in style like a Saint-Estèphe ought to be, with firm tannins, gentle grip and a dash of cracked black pepper on the finish. This is excellent. ~ (93) Neal Martin, Vinous 2-1-2025
Serious depth and complexity on the nose, showing a refreshing touch of spearmint to the pure blue fruit, cassis and minerals plus a hint of incense and graphite. Powerful but polished and taut in tannins with a linear set of fruit on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Structured, fine-boned and well-dissolved with a fresh, lengthy finish. 38% cabernet sauvignon, 59% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Great for aging. Drink from 2027. ~ (94) James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com 12-18-2024
Liquorice and dark-fruit notes. Layered fruit on the palate with a touch of oak as well. Powerful tannic frame. Oak needs to settle but plenty of substance. ~ (16.5) James Lawther, JancisRobinson.com 5-8-2023
Juicy red, blue, and black fruits, sappy herbs, violets, and chocolate notes all emerge from the 2022 Château De Pez, a ripe, full-bodied, opulent Pez that has a balanced, layered style that's already hard to resist. I love how this has come together since En Primeur, and this is well worth a case purchase. It’s going to deliver the goods any time over the coming two decades or more. ~ (94) Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com 2-27-2025
