2016 Priorat, Mas de la Rosa Vinyes Velles, Familia Torres
Glistening ruby-red. Highly perfumed aromas of fresh red and blue fruits, candied lavender and exotic spices are complemented by a smoky mineral overtone. Sappy and energetic on the palate, offering intense black raspberry, cherry and floral pastille flavors that slowly put on weight and turn spicier through the midpalate. The floral and mineral qualities repeat emphatically on the gently tannic finish, which clings with serious tenacity and persistent spiciness. Sourced from a 1.9-hectare, high-altitude plot that was planted in the mid-1930s. ~ (97) Josh Raynolds, Vinous 3-1-2021
First vintage of this single-vineyard Vinyes Velles wine; the first time in Spain that two producers share the same name (Torres and Vall Llach). Two hectares of coolly sited 80-year-old vines at 500 m near Porrera. 60% Cariñena, 40% Garnacha. Field blend. The old owner Sr Manolo, who always sold his grapes, didn’t have children who wanted to take it over. Short, 11-day vatting. 16 months in French oak barrels. Very fresh and sumptuous. Very unlike most Priorats. Polished. Very long and exceptionally fresh. Miguel Torres Maczassek is clearly very proud of this new, fresh style: 'it's all about fruit character'. The wine comes in a burgundy bottle. ~ (17) Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com 4-15-2019
When I visited the Mas de la Rosa Vineyard, I also tasted all the vintages produced so far, including the initial 2016 Mas de la Rosa, which I had tasted in 2018 before it was bottled. 2016 was an exceptional year in the zone, mild and dry, with a long vegetative cycle and very good ripeness, and there was a late harvest after some rains that cooled things down. They picked the grapes the 28th of October, 60% Cariñena and 40% Garnacha. It has 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.22 and 6.02 grams of acidity (in tartaric acid per liter). The varieties fermented separately, and the wine matured in 500-liter oak barrels for 16 months. This 2016 felt quite oaky, and it suffered in comparison with the other vintages because it was the first vintage and they were still finding their way. This is still going to need more time. 1,957 bottles, 67 magnums and 35 double magnums were filled in July 2018. ~ (94) Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 9-30-2022
